Sharjah Art Foundation has announced the 140 artists who will be participating in the 16th edition of Sharjah Biennial, more than half of whom will present new commissions. The biennial will run from 6 February to 15 June 2025, occupying venues across Sharjah City, Al Hamriyah, Al Dhaid, Kalba and other locations in the Emirate of Sharjah.

Curated by Alia Swastika, Amal Khalaf, Megan Tamati-Quennell, Natasha Ginwala and Zeynep Öz, the foundation also revealed the title of the biennial will be ‘to carry’. The theme ‘entails understanding our precarity within spaces that are not our own while staying responsive to these sites through the cultures that we hold. It also signifies a bridge between multiple temporalities, encompassing intergenerational stories and various modes of inheritance’, they said in a statement. Diverse curatorial methodologies, including residencies, workshops, sonic experiences and expanded publications will be present at the biennial, reflecting a breadth of perspectives, geographies and languages.

Hoor Al Qasimi, president and director of Sharjah Art Foundation, said: ‘By centering the act of carrying, Sharjah Biennial 16 offers a space for imagining new collective futures while recognising the weight of shared histories and experiences.’
